Earlier this month, President Joseph Biden proclaimed June 2021 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Pride Month. Pride is often touted as a virtue. Which begs the question does the Bible say anything good about PRIDE? The short answer is emphatically NO.
The purpose of the President’s proclamation was to recognize and honor the achievements of the LGBTQ+ community, to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.
There’s nothing wrong with celebrating and recognizing other’s achievements, especially those marginalized in society. However, what is wrong is celebrating a movement that is contrary to God’s Word as if it’s a virtue.
God denounces pride, and He warns of the serious consequences throughout Scripture. Here are
10 Things Scripture Says About Pride:
Scriptures are New King James, unless otherwise noted.
1. I will break the pride of your power; I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. - Leviticus 26:19
2 “Pour out the overflowings of your anger, And look on everyone who is proud, and make him low. 12“Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him, And tread down the wicked where they stand. - . Job 40:11-12
3. “I will punish the world for its evil, And the wicked for their iniquity; I will halt the arrogance of the proud, And will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. - Isaiah 13:11
4. Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment. - Psalm 73:6
5. A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor. - Proverbs 29:23
6. Though the LORD is great, he cares for the humble, but he keeps his distance from the proud. - Psalm 138:6 NLT
7. To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. - Proverbs 8:13 NIV
8. Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. - Proverbs 16:18
9. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2
10. Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23All these evil things come from within and defile a man.” - Mark 7:22-23
From this list of verses you can see that pride in any form is not something embraced by God.
To be clear, pride is something that can befall any of us. Its a vice, not a virtue. At the end of the day pride can also be very deceptive.
Just as Satan used deception in the Garden to make Adam and Eve believe that they could be like God, he’s using it today to ensnare people of all walks of life. His goal is always to make people think a. you don’t need anything or anyone, especially God. b. you’ve accomplished XYZ by your own means.
It takes humility to acknowledge our pride. But it’s in our humility that God can lift us up.
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. -1 Peter 5:6
