To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: - Ecclesiastes 3:1
Seasons are changing. Spring has sprung. A recent article in the New York Times mentions that allergy seasons are getting worse. Allergies are not the only thing that has gotten worse. More concerning is the worsening societal/cultural season we are living in. But it’s important for us to remember that seasons change…God doesn’t.
In Solomon’s Godly wisdom, he tells us that there is a season and a purpose for everything under heaven. God has a divine purpose for every situation and event happening.
To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: 2 A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; 3 A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; 4 A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance; 5 A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; 6 A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away; 7 A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak; 8 A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace.
Seasons of the Church
We see the contrast in the above between bitter and sweet. Scriptures are full of contrasts: light/darkness, reap/sow, life/death and the list goes.
The Contrast of bittersweet is the highlight of Ecclesiastes. They’re the contrasts of the seasons God gives us.
Hebrew word for seasons means “an appointed occasion, time.
The evil age we’re living in these last days we as the Church cannot be ignorant because ignorance isn’t bliss.
Just as we’re aware of the natural seasons that change it’s imperative we know the seasons of God concerning spiritual matters.
Consider a few of the seasons the church needs to be aware of:
- A time to weep – As believers, we need to weep for things that breaks God’s heart
- A time to mourn – for our own sins and the sins of the world. In 1 Peter 4:17 Peter tells us that judgement begins with the House of God.
- A time to love – God is love, the world will know us by the love we have for each other
And a time to hate – this is the time to hate things God hates (Proverbs 6:16-19) - A time of war – We are in a time of spiritual warfare – (Ephesians 6:12)
It’s a refreshing reminder to us when seasons change, God doesn’t change! Jesus is the same yesterday today and FOREVER!
Be Encouraged!
