Have you ever had a song stuck in your head? The song “What is Love”, by 90’s singer Haddaway began ringing in my head the other day as I was reading 1 John 4.
The lyrics are in stark contrast to John’s letter on the subject:
What is love? Oh baby, don't hurt me Don't hurt me No more I give you my love, but you don't care
The desperation in the words of those lyrics echo loudly the pain so many people experience due to the world’s warped view of love.
How many young people have become vulnerable to the lies of Satan, (the ruler of this world) because they’re not receiving the proper affection from family?
How many parents after showing a lifetime of care to their own children, find themselves abandoned in their senior years by those same children?
Friends this is not God’s desire.
However, John’s letter provides a refreshing insight into how we can know pure love through the eyes of the Lord.
16And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love; whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in him. - 1 John 4:16
The Lord Jesus is the very definition of what each of us needs and desire in our hearts.
Ultimately that desire is fulfilled by trusting Christ and His finished work on the Cross and His Resurrection.
Then we can begin to comprehend the question, What is love?
Only then is it possible to abide in God’s love and give it to others.
Be Encouraged!
